It just occurred to me that I may have made some promises that I obviously cannot fulfil. Maybe in the heat of passion or under the influence, I can’t remember for sure. But what I do remember is the fact that I have been a man of my word. Let me state that the emphasis here is MAN. So it would be unfair if you are still looking up to me to fulfil a divine promise. I’m just a mortal being albeit with an immortal spirit. Away from all that, I wish to examine those unrealistic promises I may have said for whatever reason.

Firstly, I want to start with the likely things people say when they are desperate or under the influence. Hopefully, you didn’t take me seriously when I said I was going to give you the world. Come on! Let’s get real, I am in the world and it’s not just me, I’m with billions of humans too. So if I were to somehow pull that off, are you planning to get another world for your family or other inhabitants? I’m just curious, what do you even need the whole world for? Not figuratively, I’m talking literally. Have you thought about the alien invasion or Armageddon?

I’m not trying to play with your feelings, rather, I’m only exploring the possibilities of a lonely world. Another question; as the sole owner of the planet, would everyone have to pay to live in your world? These thoughts have brought me sleeplessness and it is with grave concern that I’m addressing my concerns. Let me let you chew on that right while I process another.

My next concern is the rationality of the word ‘forever’. The making of a divine prom I might have said that I’ll be with you forever or till the end of time. Haha. That’s funny and it’s cracking me up. I think the phrase, “till the end of time” should be spoken by immortals who have since signed off from ‘flesh and blood’.

When will time end, by the way? It also falls in the same vein as the word ‘everlasting’. I understand the faith charge where humans try to push their luck by making extraterrestrial declarations. In the Christian faith, one is expected to live in this world without living in it. As confusing as that may sound, it’s a modus operandi. What’s most confusing is the circumstances in which these words might have been said. It’s rather obvious that these crisp words were not uttered during a prayer session. If it were, I wouldn’t be having these concerns. Still, on biblical connotations, it’s clear that heaven and earth will pass away. So, it makes every hormone-induced promise laughable.

I have heard people say, I’ll die for you. For goodness sake, life is not a Shakespearean play. I am a firm believer that we can all live with anything we were not born with. Being suicidal can be a result of extreme religious indoctrination, mental illness or both. Anyone who has the privilege of being sane in this complex world of ours would rather let the tick of the clock see them out naturally than truncate life abruptly. We are living in times where people cheat death by using scientific methods to prolong their lives. Death will come to everyone one day and it is a no-brainer for one to rush towards it prematurely. A trip to various continents and beholding the beauty of nature keeps the adventure in us going. Rising early to the spectacle of the orange sunset or gazing at the masterly crafted hills and valleys by nature soothes the eyes and for the thoughtful, it creates wonder and excitement. Why would anyone want to trade that when still with the presence of mind? So please, pardon any of such uninspired cheap talk. Those utterances were said at best in the context of figurative expressions.
